STUDENT ILLNESS/FIRST AID PROTOCAL & GUIDELINES FOR WHEN STUDENTS CAN RETURN TO SCHOOL

The following guidelines will be used to assist in determining if a student will remain in school or if the parent/guardian will be contacted to have the student sent home from school. These guidelines also cover some first aid situations. (Definition of First Aid: Non life-threatening situation. The immediate and temporary care given in case of an accident or sudden illness, before the services of a physician can be secured.) When an emergency arises which may require further medical services, parent/guardian home and work numbers will be called. If there is no response, the emergency number stated in your child’s chart will be called. Only in extreme emergencies will an ambulance be used.

1. If a student has an oral temperature of 100 degrees or more, the student is to be sent home.

2. If a student has an episode of vomiting, the student will be sent home.

3. If a student has complaints of sore throat or earache, accompanied by oral temperature of 100 degrees or greater, the student is to be sent home and referred for medical follow up.

4. If a child has no temperature and no previously identified problems but has drainage from the ear and ear pain, the parent will be contacted to make them aware of the situation. It will be the parent’s responsibility to determine if medical follow up is necessary. The child may remain in school.

5. If a student has an identified case of head lice, the student will be sent home immediately for treatment. Students do not need to be sent home if they have been treated for lice, and nit casings remain. See guidelines under: Guidelines for when students can return to school.

6. If a student has extreme redness of the eyes accompanied by itching and pussy drainage from the eye, the student is to be sent home/referred for medical follow up.
